JACOB FRANKLIN KLINGAMAN

BORN: Jacob was born on Janurary 1, 1856 in Warsaw, Indiana, Kosciusko County. He was the son of William Klingaman, born August 2, 1810 in Berks County, Pennsylvania and Angeline Noggle, born 1825 and died in 1861, who was William's second wife. Jacob was just about five years old when his mother died. He was then raised by his older half sister, Catherine Klingaman Nietz and her husband David Nietz. Catherine was the daughter of William's first wife, Nellie Gray Klingaman.

MARRIAGE: Jacob married Jennie Cleaver on June 7, 1880 in Summerville, Kansas and they had a daughter before Jenny died, which was not long afterwards. On November 3, 1891, Jacob married Anna Driscoll in Oklahoma city. It is not known what became of Anna and the marriage. On May 31, 1896 he married Katie Ann Tye daughter of Lucy Jane Tye and John Henry Tye. Katie was born in 1874 so Jacob was almost 40 when they married and she was just about 22. After Katie died in 1910, Jacob married again to Belle ---? but the marriage did not last long. Jacob had another marriage between the death of Jenny and his marriage to Katie.

CHILDREN: Jacob and Jennie Cleaver had one daughter:

Nellie Klingaman born about 1881 who lived with him and Katie in Oklahoma City during part of Nellie's late teenage years. She married Frank White and they moved to Denver, Colorado. They had one son who died in infancy. Nellie and Frank raised her half sister, Marie Klingaman from about the age of eleven or twelve and died in 1925, the same year that Marie graduated from High School.

Jacob and Katie had the following children:

Bennie F. Klingaman was born February 28, 1898 in Oklahoma and died within the first few months of his life.

Lottie "Lois" Klingaman was born March 28, 1901 in Oklahama Territory. She married Mitchell Charles Rye and they had no children. Lois was born with a crippled foot that was not repaired properly. The left foot and leg were smaller than her other one so she learned to walk with two different sized shoes and usually had a high heel to lift up her crippled foot to a longer length. Through the early years of her life she wore a leg brace. She and Mitchell lived and worked in Oklahoma City until they retired about 1950 and moved to a farm near Waldron, Arkansas in Scott County. Several years after she was widowed, in about 1983 she joined her sister and family by moving to Sedona, Arizona. She was a very strong and determined personality and was an avid gardener. For several years she raised Pekingnese Dogs and always had one or two Pekes in her household. She kept her good mind until her death which came from a stroke as she came within a few week's of her 100th birthday. She managed to live alone until weeks before the end of her life with the help of friends and neighbors even though she was confined most of the time to a wheel chair due to a hip fracture in 1986. She died in Arizona in 2001. Her ashes are in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

Floyd was born about 1903 and died in 1906. Floyd had been sick with whooping cough and was having trouble breathing. He was taken by the family to Colorado from their home in Oklahoma City. They travelled by wagon the summer of 1906. They heard that Colorado's climate might help him. They stayed in Littleton with some relatives of Jacob's. But Floyd died while they were there and is buried in Littleton.

Ina "Marie" Klingaman was born August 7, 1907 in Oklahoma City. She married Julius I. Puente and Edward Mandel Berger. She had four children. She died December 23, 1993 in Sedona, Arizona and her ashes are scattered there. Click on her name to read her more extensive biography.

LOCATIONS: From Indiana, where he was born Jacob lived next in Minneapolis, Kansas where his half sister, Catherine Klingaman Niesz lived. She raised him when his mother died. Later he staked some land in the newly opened Oklahoma Territory about 1889 or 1890. This land that he acquired was in section 27 of Hartzell Township of Oklahoma County. At first he probably lived there with his wife Anna Driscoll. He opened a little store and a post office there. He was the Postmaster of Delphos, Oklahoma. He most likely named it after Delphos, Kansas. When he and Katie were married, she lived there early in their marriage. But most of his years from the 1880's on he and Katie lived in Oklahoma City with their family. He built several houses on the block he owned at Fourth and Stiles steets. near downtown Oklahoma City.and his two daughters were born there. Jacob kept half of his land in Harzell Township which was a few miles north of their Oklahoma City property. He farmed this land and would take Lois and Marie out to visit his acreage now and then. He also built and owned several houses that he rented for income in Oklahoma City.

DEATH: Jacob died quickly from what was called "Dropsy" January 22, 1931 at his home in Oklahoma City. He is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.
