WILLIAM KLINGAMAN

BIRTH: William was born February 7, 1810 and baptised at Zion's "Old Red" Union Church at West Brunswick Twp. Berks/SchuylkillCounty,Pennsylvania to Jacob Klingaman and Maria Magdalena Schofenn/Shaffer Klingaman..

MARRIAGE: William married Nellie Gray (Elinor) before 1828. Elinor was born in 1811. She died in 1839 and is buried in the Beechwood Cemetery near Alliance, Stark Cty. Ohio. After he was widowed he married Angaline Noggle b.1825 or 1828 in Ohio. They were married about 1843. Angaline died in 1861 and is buried in the Clunette Cemetery, Koscuisko County, Indiana.

CHILDREN: William and Elinor "Nellie" had the following children and there may have been others:

Nancy Klingaman born about 1828 in Stark County, Ohio. She married Andrew Yoder in 1849. Nancy went to help neighbors stricken with Diphtheria, caught the disease and died in a single day in 1864. This information came from Pierre Stephenson of Ocean Park, Washington (from the Yoder Newsletter). Her death was in South Bend, St Joseph County, IN. She died along with two small children. All are buried in Bowman Cmty, South Bend, St Joseph Co., IN. Andrew married again to Phoebe Ruple.

John Klingaman born about 1833 John is possibly a son of William and Nellie Gray. The 1850 census of Prairie Twp. Kosciusko County, Indiana shows a John Kingaman, age 17 living with a Davis family. This has not been confirmed as yet.

Catherine (Kate) was born in 1835 in Ohio. She must have been about 15 when her mother died. Catherine married David Nietz (Niesz) in 1859 in Richland County, Ohio. Evidently she could have no children of her own. She and David adopted two daughters, Lucetta Jane b. about 1855 in Ohio who married Allen H. Ward and the second adopted daughter was Mary who married a Santner. She also raised her half brother Jacob Franklin Klingaman from the age of five when his mother died. Jacob was the son William and his second wife, Angaline. Catherine may have raised others of her siblings that were still quite young when Angaline died. She and her husband went to Sheridan, Twp. Ottawa Co. Ks. in 1870 from Ohio where they homesteaded land just north of Minneapolis, Ks. Catherine died in 1919 and is buried in the Highland Cemetery at Minneapolis, Ottowa County Kansas.

Elizabeth(Betsy)Klingaman Cheevers, was born in 1837. In the 1850 Census there is an Elizabeth, age 13, living with William and Angaline which she must have done after her mother's death in 1839. On January 11, 1855 Elizabeth married Ralph C. Cheevers in Koscuisko County, Indiana. They are known to have had at least the following children: Willis, Fredonia and Mary.

Polly Klingaman(Rice?) This is a possible daughter of William and Nellie Gray. We are still looking for information.

William and Angaline had the following children:

William B. was born August 6, 1844 near Canton, Stark County Ohio. He married Barbara Snyder and lived in Kansas and Oklahoma . They had the following children: Alice, George, Anna, Laura, Phillip, Maude, Jacob Franklin, Bessie May and Eva Mae. Phillip died as a child. Anna married Samuel C. (Chick) Foster and lived in Littleton, Arapaho County, Colorado where they raised their children who were: Virginia, Laura, Charles, Effie, Roy, Eunice, Claude and Edna. Jacob Franklin, had at least three children: William, Doreen and Zenona. William died March 8, 1905 in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

Daniel was born in 1846 in Ohio. He died in 1864 at age 18 and is buried in Clunette, Indiana. There is some confusion with the name David born the same year according to one census that leaves off the name of Daniel. It could be that the name was David Daniel or Daniel David and there was only the one child, not two.

Susanna C. was probably born in 1848 in Ohio. (There is also a date of 1850 for her birth.) She died in 1874. She married Harvey Brandt December 20, 1866 in Koscuisko County, Indiana. They had a son named Ed Brandt but Susanna died when Ed was six weeks old and Ed was raised by his Aunt Sophia, Susanna's sister. He married Dollie ? about 1875 and made his home in Montrose and Long Beach, Ca.

Della or Delfina (Delphina ?) was born in Feb. 22,1851 in Indiana. Della was about ten years old when her mother died in 1861. Then when her father died in 1866, she was still a minor at 15 years of age. As an orphan, she was assigned to David H Anglin as her guardian on April 21, 1866 and then to James F. Anglin on March 4, 1870. Della married Owen Arthur Disney on Oct. 1, 1871 in Ottawa Co. Ks. Their children were: Georgianna M., Erla L., Stuart L., Elnora C., James A. and Hattie D. Della died in 1890 in Ottowa, Ks.

Solomon was born May 26, 1853 in Indiana. Solomon was about eight years old when his mother died in 1861. Then when his father died in 1866, he was still a minor at 13 years of age. As an orphan, he was assigned to David H Anglin as his guardian on April 21, 1866 and then to James F. Anglin on March 4, 1870. Solomon married at least two times. He married Julia (Jewell) Ann Porter on April 6, 1879 in Koscuiko Cty. Indiana. His second wife was Mary A. Horne whom he married in July 1892 in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. In 1870 he was still living in Prairie Township, Koscuisko Co. Indiana. His known children with Julia Porter were: Bert Soloman born 1880 and Cleveland O. (Cleve) . born in 1884. He had two children with his second wife, Mary Horne: a child b. about 1894 that died before 1900 and Lilly M. born April 24, 1896 in Oklahoma City, Ok. Territory. He may have had another marriage. Solomon died Feb. 25, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Ok. and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

Sophia A. was born April 4th or 8th, 1855 in Koscuiko County, Indiana. Sophia was about six years old when her mother died in 1861. Then when her father died in 1866 she was still a minor at 10-11 years of age. As an orphan, she was assigned to David H Anglin as her guardian on April 21, 1866 and then to James F. Anglin on March 4, 1870. She married William M. Hepler February 7, 1875 in Koscuisko Co. Indiana and had the following children: Joseph Romadell, Charles Henry, Mary Mae, Merle McClellen (Mack), William F (Bill), Ada Belle, Cora Pearl, and George Robert, and maybe others. Joseph died in infancy. The family lived in Kansas after 1884 and then lived in Oklahoma from 1889 or 1890. By 1890, Sophia and William owned one quarter of a Section of Hartzell Township of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Territory. However they had sold this land before 1900. In 1886 their son Charles was born in Ottowa County, Kansas and Ada Belle was also born in Kansas in 1889. Cora born June 15, 1891 was their first child born in Oklahoma, near Spencer which is very close to their property in Hartzell Township. Spencer is in the northern part of Crutcho Township. They remained in Oklahoma. Sophia died in November 1936 at Oklahoma City, Ok. and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma beside her husband, William who died in 1909.

Jacob Franklin was born January 1, 1856 or possibly as late as 1859 in Warsaw, Koscuisko County, Indiana. Jacob was about two to five years old when his mother died in 1861. Then when his father died in 1866, he was still a minor at seven to ten years of age. As an orphan, he was assigned to David H Anglin as his guardian on April 21, 1866 and then to James F. Anglin on March 4, 1870. But he was actually raised mostly by his half sister, Catherine (Kate) Klingaman Nietz and lived in Kansas with her family. He married Jennie M. Cleaver on June 7, 1880 in Summerville, Kansas. Jenny died soon after their daughter, Nellie Elizabeth, was born. Nellie was born March 14 1881 in Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas. Jacob had a second marriage to Anna A. Driscoll on November 3, 1891 in Oklahoma City. It is not clear how this marriage ended. Then on May 31, 1896 he married Katie Ann Tye in Oklahoma City, Ok. They had two boys Benny who was born in 1898 and Floyd who was born about 1903, and two girls, Lottie (Lois) born March 28, 1901 and Ina (Marie) born August 7, 1907. Only the girls survived into adulthood. The girls lived with their grandparents, Lucy Jane and John Henry Tye after their mother's accidental death in 1910. Jacob married one more time after Katie died but the marriage did not work out and he was divorced from this woman, Belle ? who brought a young son into the marriage. Dates are not yet known. Jacob died May 22, 1931 in Oklahoma City and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

Isaac born 18--? Died as an infant.

Annetta died as infant in 1861 and so did her mother, Angaline.

LOCATIONS: William spent only his first few years in Pennsylvnia and then his father, Jacob moved the family to Stark County, Ohio. This was some time betweeen 1813 and 1816 . By 1850 or 1851 one of his children, Della, was born in Indiana so he and Angeline must have left Ohio about that time or a little before. The Indiana census of 1860 shows him living in Prairie Twp., Koscuisko County Indiana where he owned 160 acres by the time he died.

DEATH: William died in 1866 in Indiana and is buried at Clunette Cemetery, Kosciusko County beside his second wife, Angaline who died in 1861 and beside his son, Daniel who died in 1846.

FURTHER NOTES: In the 1850 census, for Kosciusko County, Indiana, Prairie Township, William is listed as William Klingeman (with the 'e' not the 'a') age 40, Angeline 25 (spelled this way in the census report), Elizabeth 13, William 5, David 4, and Susan 2 (Perhaps Susan was about two months of age at that time.)

In the 1860 census for Kosciusko, County, Indiana in the Prairie Township, William is listed as William Clingerman. At that time he is shown as 50 years of age and his wife, Angaline is 35. The children are listed as William, 16, Daniel 14, Susan 10 ?, Delfina 10?, Solamon 7 (Name is spelled this way in census report.), Sophia 5, and Jacob five months. (But family records maintain that Jacob Franklin was born in 1856.) The name of David is now missing. And there is a Daniel listed in the latter census so David may have died during the ten years or perhaps there is a confusion as there is now a Daniel listed as 14 which David would have been in 1860. William is listed as a farmer whose real estate is valued at $1000 and his personal estate is $500. Angaline died the next year, in 1861 at the age of 36.

MANY THANKS GO TO ELIZABETH KLINGAMAN AND TO MARY ANN WINTERS FOR THEIR VALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.
