JOHN HENRY TYE

BIRTH: 1840 in Casey County, Kentucky to Wiley Tye and Sabra Hart Tye. He had two brothers that lived to adulthood. Joshua Hansford Tye and George Tye. And a sister, Julia Tye who married George W. Leach.

MARRIAGE: John Henry married Lucy Jane Tye, a distant cousin who was born in Kentucky in 1848. In notes of his grandaughter, Marie Klingaman, the marriage was said to have taken place on August 8, 1868 near Anderson, Missouri in McDonald County. However there is a record of Lucy and John's marriage at Daviess County, Missouri on August 27, 1868. In the 1960's Lucy stated in a letter that her marriage took place on August 27th.

CHILDREN: John Henry and Lucy had the following children:

Santa "Lena" was born May 28, 1869 probably in Daviess County, Mo. She married George Duran Lockhart on September 10, 1888. There is a note with the Tye Photo Abum that says Lena was born in Speed, Mo. But Speed is in Cooper County, Mo. and since this is where Lena's husband George was born, there could have been a mistake. Lena and George made their home in Oklahoma City. Several of their children went on to settle in Oregon. They had eight sons and five daughters. One daughter was Lucy Wiseman who in 1980 returned to her cousin, Lois Klingaman Rye, the Tye Photo Album that ten year old Lena had obtained from Lucy in 1879.

Sterling Lee was born March 10, 1872 and died September 3, 1873. He was possibly born near Springfield in Geene County, Mo. or in Jasper County, Mo.

Katie Ann was born October 11, 1874 in Springfield, Missouri. She married Jacob Franklin Klingaman on May 31, 1896. They first lived at Delphos, Oklahoma where Jacob had staked some land in Hartzell Township in Oklahoma County in the newly opened Oklahoma Territory about 1889 or 1890. The couple moved on into Oklahoma City at what is now almost downtown Oklahoma City at Fouth and Stiles.where they had four children, two sons and two daughters. Both sons, Bennie and Floyd died very young; Bennie, at a few months of age and Floyd at about 3-4 years old. Lottie Lois was born in 1901 and Ina "Marie" was born in 1907.Katie died from the ressults of an accidental fall on May 3, 1910 and she is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Ok.

Dottie was born September 1, 1877 and died Sept. 25, 1879 probably at Rolla, Missouri.

Effie was born December 7, 1879 in Missouri and married GeorgeFleetwood Ward (Fleet) October 21, 1902. She died in 1948. They made their home near Oklahoma City. Effie and "Fleet" had four daughters: Lasetta, Hazel, Georgia Sue and Blanche. Effie died in 1948 and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

George was born in Seymour, Texas, Baylor County on October 16, 1882 and died November 11, 1882.

John Robert was born December 19,1883 in Comanche County Texas. He married Alma Mitchell October 31, 1909 and they were separated in the summer of 1912 and divorced. He married twice more, once to> Molly Martin. John was a trick rider and roper. He also participated in Wild West shows often travelling with Will Rogers. He was a friend of Jim Minnick, the so called "father of Polo" and they raised horses which they showed all over the country. Later in life he opened one of the first auto upholstery shops in Oklahoma City. His grave is in Spencer Oklahoma at the Kolb Cemetery by his parent's graves. The marker shows he died Feb.12,1949 of Tuberculosis.

Franklin Oliver was born October 21, 1886 in Seymour, Baylor County, Texas. He was single at age 25.There is a note in the family records that he was married October 18, 1926 toFaye F. Howland and that they separated. He also married a Jewish girl,Osie Davis > but no date is known. He was killed in 1930 by a train while trying to help someone on the tracks.

Susie Love was born June 16, 1889 in Seymour, Baylor County, Texas and married Othell Rupert Roach on December 23, 1911 and later divorced and married Alfred Kenney in 1919. She and Othell had one daughter, Gloria whose married name was Womble. With Alf she had Marguerite, Carolyn, and Bill. Sue died suddenly of heart failure at her home in January 1959 and is buried in the Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

LOCATIONS: Born in Kentucky, John Henry fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy at Pea Ridge, Arkansas in 1862. He later came to Missouri and after he married Lucy Jane they lived near her parents in Daviess County for a while. Then they were living in Arkansas in 1870 with their one year old daughter, Santa Lena Tye. *(See Census information below.) Next they may have lived in or near Springfield or Joplin, Missouri or both and then by the mid-1870's they were living at Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. In 1880 John moved the family to Baylor County,Texas at Seymour. They may have lived in Comanche County for a short time as well. When the Oklahoma Territory was opened in 1891 he and Lucy and family became "Boomers" and eventually settled in what is now downtown Oklahoma City at 4th and Stiles. Here they lived for the rest of their lives.

DEATH: John died in 1919 in Oklahoma City and is buried in Kolb Cemetery at Spencer, Oklahoma.

FURTHER NOTES: John, fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. His own brother, Joshua Hansford Tye fought for the Union. John was a horse trader and travelled widely. He seems to have been a hard-drinking, rough frontiersman who was away from his home much of the time. In later years, his young grandaughter, Marie, lived with him and Lucy Jane at 4th and Stiles St. in Oklahoma City. She recalls he chewed tobacco which he spit into a can. Sometimes he missed the can and Marie Klingaman recalled, with disgust, "Grandma would have to clean up after him".

* The Census of 1870 of Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas listed a J.H.Tye born 1841 with a wife named Lovey and a child born in 1869 named Stanford. No one has ever connected this with any Tye in the family until now. It is almost certain that this is John Henry Tye. The name of his wife is very hard to read on the actual copy of the census report. But it is surely a misreading of the name Lucy. The name of the daughter is shown as the unusual name, "Stanford". John and Lucy did have a daughter born in 1869 but her name was Santa Lena. It is not hard to think that the census writer could not hear this unusual name correctly and wrote it as Stanford instead. Another reason to believe this is the correct J.H. Tye is that it is known from another record that when Mary Ann Tye and William Parrish Camp married in 1870-71 in Boone County, Arkansas, the marriage took place in the home of John Henry Tye. Mary Ann Tye was Lucy Jane's sister.
